Helping Newlyweds Tackle Thank-Yous The Bergen Record By ABIGAIL LEICHMAN, STAFF WRITER Professional organizer Stacey Agin Murray knows that many newlyweds don't know how to write thank-you notes and don't have much time to get the job done. So the 36-year-old Fair Lawn resident has compiled a how-to booklet, 7 Steps to an Organized Wedding Thank You Note: A Bride and Groom's Guide to Staying Sane During the Thank You Note Writing Process. When she and her husband, Jay, wed in September 2000, they faced the task of acknowledging some 50 engagement gifts, 75 shower gifts and more than 100 wedding gifts in the span of a year. "There were a lot of people to thank, and I felt as if everybody deserved a heartfelt thank-you note, not a generic one," she says. "My husband and I were very grateful for the outpouring of gifts to help start us on our way and wanted to thank everybody in the way they deserved, but we tried not to make it laborious." Drawing on her professional expertise, Murray created a system for their own use and developed the 26-page guide out of that. "I knew there had to be more people like me out there," she says. The guide aims to help couples spend less time while writing more personalized notes that will leave the recipient happy at having spent the money on a gift in the first place. In addition to her self-published strategies, she offers these tips: • Be prepared. Order more thank-you notes than you think you'll need. Unexpected gifts may come from people who are not on your guest list. • Pace yourself. If you feel comfortable writing three to five notes a day, make that your goal. Don't exhaust yourself to the point where you're too tired or cranky to enjoy your first weeks of wedded bliss. • Do not write thank-you cards at the beach. Even the most sun-loving member of your family will not appreciate a thank you note sprinkled with suntan lotion and sand.
