Catalogs: Organizing Products By Mail

You don’t live near The Container Store? No time to browse the stores to find useful organizing products? That’s OK—just walk to your mailbox!

Before internet shopping became the rage, those who could not get to a store, would shop by catalog. Despite their internet presence, most companies continue to deliver enticing, full-color catalogs right to your doorstep.

Besides shopping on the internet and in brick and mortar stores, professional organizers rely on catalogs to keep them up to date on the latest and greatest innovations in organizing one’s home and office. Sometimes inspiration for a closet re-design or a solution to countertop clutter is discovered with the turn of a page.

I’d like to share with you some of my preferred catalogs—the ones that I file on my shelf for reference (and not in the ‘circular file’). There are too many catalogs to list--these below are just the tip of the iceberg...

Lillian Vernon

Lillian Vernon is one of America's most accomplished and well-known leaders in the direct-mail catalog industry. As a housewife in 1951, she started a mail order business in her small apartment using her kitchen table as her office. In 1956, Lillian published her first 16-page black and white catalog. Organizing products can be found for areas such as Office, Travel, Photos, Jewelry, Bed/Bath, Kitchen/Pantry, Closets/Drawers, Kids, and Electronics.

Now that you have all of these catalogs, what should you do with them? Some tips on catalog management...

• If you receive a catalog and do not see anything of interest, toss it into your recycle pile immediately.

• If you receive a catalog and see an item of interest to you or as a gift, rip out the page it is located on. Rip off the back cover. This is where you will often find a code number or customer ID number. Staple the item page(s) and the back cover together—that’s all the information you need for making a purchase.

• Create a specific place in your home to keep a folder labeled ‘To Buy’ or ‘To Order From Catalog.’ Place above papers in the folder until you wish to place your order.

Happy Catalog Shopping!
