Organizing Your Fridge with Magnets

Last month we took a look at some tips for organizing the inside of a refrigerator. Now that you’ve purged all green and fuzzy food-like substances and moved your biggest bottles to the back of the shelf, it’s time to organize the outside of your refrigerator...

There are many ‘kitchen-related’ organizing tools that can help de-clutter the surface of a fridge. One item that can help keep you organized is a magnet. Magnets come in different shapes and sizes and adhere to most refrigerators. While some people prefer the pristine look of their refrigerator doors, others enjoy hanging coupons, photos, and their kid’s latest spelling test for all to see.

If you are of that mindset, here are some gadgets for utilizing the outside of your refrigerator as an organizing center:

Magnetic Notepad

Keep a magnetic notepad on your fridge for your shopping list. When you finish the last baby carrot or make a sandwich with the last two pieces of bread, jot down ‘carrots’ or ‘whole wheat bread’ on the notepad, rip off the page from the pad and take it to the supermarket.

Magnetic Hooks

Need a place to hang keys, pot holders, or insulated lunch bags? Magnetic hooks are capable of holding small, lightweight objects that might otherwise take up valuable counter space or get lost behind the microwave.

Magnetic Clips

Magnetic clips can hold coupons, pictures, small ziploc bags of goodies, or in a pinch—a damp dishtowel. Keep items light—anything heavy will drag the clip and its contents to the bottom of your fridge and land on the floor.

Magnetic Timer

Are you always looking for a home for your kitchen timer? If so, stick it on the fridge! A magnetic timer on the refrigerator doesn’t get in the way while you’re chopping veggies and can’t accidentally melt on your stove top.

Magnetic Paper Towel Holder

A magnetic paper towel holder is perfect for the person with a small amount of counter space in their kitchen. It can be stuck to the fridge either horizontally or vertically depending upon preference. If you have room, hang the magnetic paper towel holder on the side of your fridge closest to the sink for easy access.

Magnetic Basket/Pocket

Create a home for take-out menus, coupons, pens, and anything else small enough to get lost in a drawer with these basket-like objects.

General tips for organizing the outside of your refrigerator

• Purge papers/pictures/coupons at least once a month.

• Group like-items together if you enjoy filling your refrigerator surface with pictures and papers. Split the surface of the fridge/freezer into areas. Designate one to be for kid’s artwork (ex. top left), one for objects hung on magnetic hooks (ex. left side closest to sink). This will make the surface of your fridge appear less cluttered.

• Place what is most important to you at eye-level. If you’re always cutting out coupons, keep those on the top half of the refrigerator surface so you’re not constantly bending down to collect and retrieve them.
